Karakul Lake is located almost 200km away from the next city, Kashgar, near the adventurous Karakoram Highway at an altitude of 3600m. Due to the arid climate there is little vegetation. Nevertheless - this region is not uninhabited: a number of Kyrgyz people aren living in yurts and adobe houses around the lake. Their colorful clothing makes them a visible sign of human civilization amidst untouched nature.
