While the old Uyghur-dominated Kashgar was shaped by simple adobe houses and a life style that hasn't changed for centuries, the rapidly growing Chinese new city showcases all amenities and challenges of modern life. In the beginning, the new city was restricted to a few patches within the old town, however, nowadays this balance has been reversed and the old houses are mere islands within the all-encompassing new Kashgar.
