A new high-tech pagoda is being built from steel and concrete: workers weld together the skeleton of a new Bund skyscraper in Shanghai, with a finished "pagoda" - the Jinmao Tower on the opposite riverside - is glittering in the last sunlight behind, the sparkles of welding juxtaposing those of the sun.
